Silence, meditation, horses and lasting inner peace

"I love not the man less, but nature more" Lord byron
The ultimate aim of this five-day silent retreat is to offer you a space of rest, peace, and deep nourishment.
You will receive pure love and connection from the therapy horses, grounding and delicious meals, emotional warmth and counsel, and a safe, quiet space to turn inward and gently meet your own vulnerability.
You will leave with the sweetness of having come home to your heart. From the safety of this knowing, a sense of authentic boldness and creative courage will emerge — ready to guide you toward a life defined on your own terms.
Why Silence?
Often we get a sense of ourselves, our physical representation of consciousness, through the responses and reactions of other people. With this constant feedback, we take on beliefs and perceptions that may not reflect our true purpose.
Silence is where the labels that define us fall away, leaving a mind of still water — through which we can see reality clearly. In this stillness, you will discover where you need to grow and what is holding you back.
On a conscious level, we often blame others for what we cannot control. Our reactions, however, come from unprocessed wounds in the unconscious mind. In silence, these projections stop, allowing us to feel and heal what lies beneath. As this unfolds, the mind becomes still, clear, and aligned with peace, joy, love, compassion, and creativity.

The Itinerary
Please note, the schedule may shift slightly depending on the weather. If it rains, we’ll move outdoor sessions indoors. You’ll arrive on Sunday evening to settle in and prepare for silence. During the opening gathering, we’ll cover practical details — housekeeping, meals, timing, and any concerns about communication, medication, or diet. This is a time to release any worries and ready yourself for the coming days. Each day follows a simple rhythm, marked by the gentle sound of a bell to guide transitions between meals, meditations, and rest. At the start of each afternoon meditation, you’ll receive guidance and a focus for contemplation, supported by readings and poems. You may choose to meditate quietly in the paddock, on the beach, or among the trees. Your meditation leader will offer guidance when needed, and Katherine — who has worked daily with these horses for years — will lead you through the Meditate with Horses sessions with care and attention to safety. Daily Schedule Monday–Thursday: • 8:00 am – Breakfast • 9:00 am – Meditate with Horses • 12:30 pm – Lunch • 2:00 pm – Meditation • 6:00 pm – Dinner • 7:00 pm – Free time to read, meditate, or journal Friday: • 8:00 am – Breakfast • 9:00 am – Closing silence and reflection • 10:00 am – Closing circle • 12:00 noon – Departures
The Venue
The House Sunnycote, 39 Silverdale Road, Arnside, LA23 2EL We hire a beautiful large Victorian house near the sea in Arnside. Arnside and Silverdale is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on a coastal corner of the Lake District National Park. You are within a short walk from a bay with views of the Lake District mountains and extensive forest and hills. The house sleeps 16 in total, but for the silent retreat, we restrict bookings to 10 people. This ensures space and peace and gives 4 guests the option of private rooms. The house is beautifully decorated in a bohemian style, with quiet spaces and a private walled garden. There are plenty of books to read, and we encourage walking, swimming, and journalling in your spare time. If you wish to extend your stay, you may choose to stay an extra night and book a beach ride on one of the horses. The Location Arnside is an unspoilt resort village and civil parish in Cumbria, set in the Arnside and Silverdale National Landscape, known for its stunning scenery, diverse wildlife, and superb walks. Located on the estuary where the River Kent meets Morecambe Bay, it's a former fishing port with a historic promenade, offers unique tidal phenomena like the tidal bore, and provides excellent walking opportunities, including ascents of Arnside Knott for panoramic views of the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. Arnside has been featured in several "Best Places to Live" and "Beautiful Seaside Towns" lists, most recently by The Times as one of the best places to live by the sea in the UK in July 2025, and also in lists of "ridiculously beautiful little seaside villages" in August 2025. The village is noted for its scenery, particularly the views from Arnside Knott across the Kent estuary and Morecambe Bay, its community spirit, and a vibrant high street.
