What Happens?
It’s hard to fully understand what happens in a Meditate With Horses session until you’ve experienced it yourself. That’s because the experience begins in the body, and the understanding comes later. Most meditation or mindfulness approaches start in the mind and gradually influence the body. With horses, the process is reversed. Horses are extraordinary mirrors. As prey animals, they are deeply attuned to their environment and to the emotional and physiological states of those around them. When we are in close connection with them, their calm, regulated nervous systems naturally begin to synchronise with ours. Their heart’s electromagnetic field is many times larger than a human’s, and they are exquisitely sensitive to subtle changes in energy, emotion, and intention. In this way, horses are the ultimate empaths—responding not to what we say or think, but to what is happening beneath the surface. A session always begins by feeding the horses, then finding a quiet place to sit together in their paddock. We might sit on folding chairs, or lie on blankets or mats on the ground. We begin with a gentle check-in, noticing how we’re feeling emotionally and what we’re aware of in our bodies. Once the horses have finished eating, they usually wander over, expecting to be groomed. But grooming here isn’t about technique or performance. Horses experience emotion physically, and their feelings often express themselves through their bodies—itchiness, restlessness, or a desire for contact. We listen carefully to their body language, allowing us to understand and validate what they’re communicating. This kind of attuned grooming invites the horses into a relaxed, digestive state, and as we slow down with them, our own nervous systems begin to settle too. We then introduce gentle breathwork and simple mindful practices, not to “do” anything, but to support this shared state of regulation. At a certain point, we step back, sit down, and allow the horses to choose how they want to be with us. This is where the meditation truly begins—co-created, responsive, and unique every time. No two sessions are ever the same. What unfolds depends on the horses, the group, and what is present in the moment. The best way to approach the experience is to expect nothing. When expectations drop away, presence becomes possible—and that’s where the deepest shifts happen. I guide you throughout, offering simple yet powerful processes such as “listening like a horse” and gently returning to the present moment again and again. For some people, strong emotions rise to the surface, and I support you carefully and skillfully through these. Others slip quickly into a state of deep calm or bliss. Sometimes the horses lie down, and you may feel drawn to lie on the grass beside them, resting in a wide, expansive sense of connection—feeling deeply alive and at one with everything. The two hours pass very quickly. We recommend not using your phone during this time so you can fully inhabit the experience, though I’m happy to take photos for you if meaningful moments arise. We don’t often give ourselves permission to be this present—immersed in nature, alongside such powerful and sensitive animals. In doing so, we begin to see more clearly what’s been holding us back, and where growth, softness, and connection are ready to emerge.
