Latest science news

The article "Understanding Equine-Assisted Interventions": The Role of Emotional Learning" explores the potential benefits of equine-assisted interventions (EAIs) for individuals with mental health and behavioural issues. Conducted by Professor Ann Hemingway and her team at Bournemouth University, the study focuses on how emotional learning through interactions with horses can facilitate positive behaviour change.

Key findings include:

  • Emotional Arousal: Interacting with horses and learning horsemanship skills can cause emotional arousal, which may underpin the positive outcomes observed in EAIs.

  • Pilot Study: The study involved nine university students participating in a half-hour session where Skin Conductivity Response (SCR) was used to measure emotional arousal.

  • Participant Experience: Although participants were not always aware of their emotional arousal, they reported feeling calm, happy, and accomplished by the end of their sessions.

  • Implications: The research suggests that emotional learning plays a crucial role in EAIs, with cognitive recognition of these changes occurring later.

A Winter Reflection: Hooves and Hope

Inspired by the quiet beauty of winter and the timeless poetry of T.S Eliot, we wanted to share this poem with you:

Preludes

The winter evening settles down

With smell of steaks in passageways.

Six o’clock.

The burnt-out ends of smoky days.

And now a gusty shower wraps

The grimy scraps

Of withered leaves about your feet

And newspapers from vacant lots;

The showers beat

On broken blinds and chimney-pots,

And at the corner of the street

A lonely cab-horse steams and stamps.

And then the lighting of the lamps.

Music in Motion

Katherine keeps listening to this song over and over. We've decided that this IS the Christmas song for 2024!

May this season bring you peace, connection, and the gentle wisdom of our equine companions.

Warmest wishes to you and your loved ones,

The Meditate with Horses Team

Katherine & Cedric
